Short or long travel

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Do you like your travel long or short , I personally prefer them to be short, to me short is less than 15 days beyond that I consider it a long travel to me the main difference between long and short travel is the intensity.
I like one week trip with everyday busy doing stuffs and visiting places, I noticed that on a two week trip, I will have many slow days with little to do, those days are nice, they allow the body to rest, however, I don’t want my body to rest.

Longer than two weeks isn’t really good for me unless it is in Spain but usually if I go more than two weeks at a places, I start to work again, I m so used to work.
They are folks they call themselves travellers and they are the people that travel more than 3 months in a row, they call the people that travel less than 3 months ‘tourists’, so I m a tourist based on that standard;) (more…)

Travel guides

travel guideDuring many years I resisted to buy travel guides type of book, one of my complains is that they often have cliché information and some outdated data.
There are also a lot of place you can visit pretty much without any travel guides, Barcelona is such a place, before I went there I printed a few pages from a website, once in Barcelona in the back of a magazine I found a map to locate trendy fashion stores in the center of Barcelona, that was it, I had my map and the pages that was enough to make a successful visit, I spent three fine days there.

I didnt have a map or a travel guide when I was in Madrid, Madrid is very big, I saw nothing of it, some people say just walk, well, it works for some cities and it doesnt for others cities. You can visit a place like Malaga (Spain), Almeria (Spain) or Cannes(France) without any map or guides but you cant do that in Madrid or even here in Brussels.

Now, I do buy travel guides, my rules to buy a travel guide

  • 1/ must fit in my jacket pocket
  • 2/ must have a map
  • 3/should cointains the essential information about the must-see places.

I see three types of travel guides one about a country, one about a city and one about a region or province. I mostly travel from to city to city. So I buy only city guides ;-) for my next trip in Benidorm (Spain…some are in Love with Marocco, some are in love with Spain) I will not need a guide or map. The place is very small , they are only beaches. It is possible that I go to Granada the place look awesome everyone keep me telling , shame on me, you havent seen Granada. Well, may be, this time I will see the place, I dont know yet. I think I will make great pictures there. Cant wait , I fly on the 22nd June.

The many mistakes of a traveler

Monday, April 16th, 2007

The classic error I made is of course to miss a flight however strangely it didn’t had that much consequence.
During these last six years of travel, I missed the plane two time, one time because I missed the plane I had to buy a ticket for a near by city of my destination I paid an extra 96 euro (not a lot money) and I made my trip it allowed me to visit a city I didn’t know about.
The second time I missed the plane I was reschedule for the next flight one day later at no additional charge (sometime it is cool to travel with big company that don’t charge again when you miss a flight), I enjoyed that additional day in my destination city. (more…)

The agony during a long flight

Andalucia sky
Any flight that is longer than two hours is a long flight for me and I dont like them, I have been in long flights recently (Brussels-NYC, NYC-Brussels – 8 hours ), (Brussels – Malaga, 3 hours), (Istanbul – Brussels, 4 hours 30).

New York – Brussels and Istanbul – Brussels were particularly painful flights, first going home is always a bit sad, the only case I’m happy to go home is when I don’t like the place that visited, it was the case when I came back from Bucharest (Romania), I was happy to leave that country. Secondly, I m always tired when I take the plane to go home no matter what hour the flight is, it is because my last day of travel is always extremely long, I remember than when I came back from Madrid in February that last day was long, I woke very early in my hotel in Extremedura, then I took the train to Madrid (3 hours and half), I arrived at 12, I managed to walk several hours in the city visiting then I headed to the airport , I had my flight at 8 P.M, an ok flight of two hours 20 minutes, however, the day was so long that I was tired during the flight. Planning trip

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

I’m planning my trip to New York, I went to that site, where they home some webcams on Times Square, this is interesting.
I bought a tourist guide today I don’t like the big tourist guide with a lot of pages, I like the pocket model one with a good map in it and succinct descriptions, I have no need for more.

I checked the hotel I will be so far it doesn’t sound like an interesting one, it is a place to sleep, the hotel is poorly rated on the visitor reviews site TripAdvisor, I will tell you more when I will be there. It will not be a long trip I don’t do long trip, I don’t like them.
