According to a BBC story Volunteers who slept for 90 minutes during the day did better at cognitive tests than those who were kept awake. The results were presented at a conference in California. A UK-based expert said it was hard to separate the pure “memory boosting” effects of sleep from those of simply being less tired.

he wealth of study into the science of sleep in recent years has so far failed to come up with conclusive evidence as to the value of a quick “siesta” during the day. The latest study, from the University of California at Berkeley, suggests that the brain may need sleep to process short-term memories, creating “space” for new facts to be learned.

In their experiment, 39 healthy adults were given a hard learning task in the morning – with broadly similar results, before half of them were sent for their siesta. When the tests were repeated, the nappers outperformed those who had carried on without sleep.

Checks on brain electrical activity suggested that this process might be happening in a sleep phase between deep sleep, and dreaming sleep, called stage 2 non-rapid eye movement sleep, when fact-based memories are moved from “temporary storage” in the brain’s hippocampus to another area called the pre-frontal cortex.

Brain ‘inbox’

Dr Matthew Walker, who led the study, reported at the AAAS conference in San Diego, said: “Sleep not only rights the wrong of prolonged wakefulness, but, at a neurocognitive level, it moves you beyond where you were before you took a nap.

More than 30 years ago, Michael Gelb author of “How to think like Leonardo Da Vinci” found out that juggling promotes whole brain thinking. He found out that notably by studying Leonardo Da Vinci who was himself a juggler. A bit late scientists today are discovering that juggling “enhance” the brain. So new ?

(BBC)In the journal, Nature Neuroscience, the scientists say they saw a 5% increase in white matter – the cabling network of the brain.
The people who took part in the study were trained for six weeks and had brain scans before and after. Long term it could aid treatments for diseases like multiple sclerosis.

Diffusion MRI

The team from Oxford’s Department of Clinical Neurology used a diffusion MRI which is able to measure the movement of water molecules in the tissues of the brain.

Often people start a training program and after a couple of weeks, they wonder, why they added a particular exercise in the program or after a couples of weeks or months, they are seduced by some techniques and they implement them in their training program , their program got distorted and they lose the purpose and the focus on what they wanted to achieve in the beginning.
There is a solution to that. It is to do a mind map of your training program not only you will have a global view of your training program and you will see how all the elements fit together. There is another added benefit it is the one of creativity.
Let say that you are training with Silva ESP Ultramind course and you want to master it. You write in the center of a large sheet of paper “Mastery of Silva ESP Ultramind”, then you do one branch called “Silva” from that branch you could connect to all the books that Jose Silva and his associates wrote reading them, is certainly good for your goal of mastery.
Another branch is called “ESP” , if you know that most ESP trainings rely on three areas visualization, relaxation and concentration that can be the sub-branches, now, your creativity can kick in. “visualization” well why not before you open your fridge visualize what is inside this is a fun short visualization and concentration drill that only take 5 seconds or less. You can come up with many more short exercises, search in your daily life for inspiration.

You will have a branch called Ultramind , they are two types of materials in the CDs, lectures by Dennis Higgins and John Latourrette, and the exercises. If you do a mind map, it will be quickly apparent that the lectures are divided in three categories “healing”,”business/career” and “relationship”.
In the exercises part, you have exercises for remote viewing “relationship” ,”business” those could your branches.
Are you seeing what I’m trying to say, once your mind map is created the global view of your training program will help you a lot, you will get more of your program that way.
It is also beneficial to mind map any training material such as your books and DVD’s , you will get more out of them that way.

I recently decided to do a mind map of a project I m working on after I listened to an interview of Michael Gelb author of “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci”.
I bought a big block of drawing paper and made my mind map, this is an incredible useful tool, I have a global view of my project now and I can access it at any time to add details and improvement. I will start mind mapping some of the book I bought , I m sure it will help a lot. This guy at the Mindmapswitch wrote an interesting post on mind mapping books. I might use that as a starting point and I will also probably get a copy of Tony Buzan book on Mind map.

Hypnopaedia or sleep learning is something I first heard in the book “Superlearning” from what I could recall the comments about sleep learning where unfavourable.
Lately, one guy I know used sleep learning to his own benefit, it awakened my interest in hypnopaedia.
I read about some interesting experiments:

Leshan (1942) tested the theory of sleep-learning on a group of nail-biting boys attending summer camp. The experimental group consisted of 20 nail-biting subjects, aged 8 to 12 years. There were two control groups: the first consisted of 8 nail-biters, aged 8 to 10 years, the second consisted of 12 nail biters, aged 11 to 14 years

The recorded message, “My finger-nails taste terribly bitter,” was repeated 50 times, 6 times a night. The results supported Leshan’s theory that recorded messages played during sleep incite mental activity. 40% of the boys quit biting their nails.

Another interesting experiment:

In 1952 the Journal of Experimental Psychology reported tests which had been conducted at George Washington University. Students were taught Chinese during sleep, between two-thirty and three A.M. The students were divided into three groups: the first group heard the Chinese words, but with mismatched English words; the second group heard the Chinese words and their English equivalents; the third group heard Strauss waltzes.

The first group required 11.1 repetitions; the second group mastered them in only 5.6 repetitions, and the third group needed 17.7 repetitions (so far as we know this group was not tested on their knowledge of Strauss waltzes).

Personally, I had many teaching dreams where I learned stuffs, I have been able to incubate such dreams by reading a book at night on the subject of my study and using some suggestions to receive more information about the subject during my sleep.

Another workable method of learning during sleep is to use the Silva Ultramind and program yourself to have dreams where you learn stuffs and you remember the stuffs you learned. Lucid dream also can be used one guy I know used lucid dream to improve his martial arts skill.

I will try to play with this again in the coming days.

Today, we have a guest post from Holly McCarthy, she shares tips on improving IQ.

Just as the human body requires exercise to remain fit, similarly human brain also needs exercise to keep itself agile. If you use it in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if we abuse it with harmful living habits, our ability to think and learn will certainly deteriorate. Here are 5 simple ways by which anyone can get more productivity out of this grey matter of our body.

Brain Nutrition

Of all the things that you can do to improve IQ, keeping good overall health is the most important, especially a physically healthier brain improves all other IQ related aspects such as, memory, logic, understanding, and problem solving abilities. Just as nutrition is indispensable for a healthy body, similarly a sharp brain demands good mental nutrition. Take rich diet with a balanced intake of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. There are also many brain nutrition supplements like Omega 3 oil capsules that you could take to support mental functioning. But be careful that such external supplements should be taken only after proper medical consultation.

Sensory　Development

Our mind perceives and interprets everything happening around us. Our thoughts get crystallized in form of images, sounds, feelings and words using our senses. Thus by working on our sensory development we increase our perception. Take up activities that would present challenging scenarios to the mind such as attempting various IQ tests and solving word or number puzzles as these sharpen our mental faculty. Also try to do varied reading as that also provides different sensory stimulus to our brain.

Take proper rest and sleep well

Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than lack of proper sleep and rest. Proper sound sleep is most essential for rejuvenating human mind as that is the time when brain locks down our memories and processes them. So if you are not having enough hours of sleep, it retards our memorizing abilities over a period of time. Follow the age old principle of early to bed and early to rise so that you can make the best out of the early morning hours when the mind is at its tranquil, productive best.

Indulge in sporting activities

Playing games such as chess, sudoku and word scrabble, which involve strategic planning, have been proved to give the right impetus towards improving ones` IQ levels. Even some outdoor games that require intense hand – mind – eye co-ordination, like squash, tennis and ping pong are strongly recommended by experts as the rapid eye movements involved in these sports stimulate mental sharpness and boost your IQ.

Improve memory

Memory is the mental ability to gather information / observations and storing them in a way that we can access it later. Though it sounds simple, but actually the ability to memorize things is a complex process wherein different parts of the brain come into play. A powerful memory is essential for an improved IQ as well as success in life.

I do not understand the mentality of people living on intellectual properties most of them are “remixer” yet they claim to be original creator when they really aren’t.
Consider the Aladdin character it wasn’t created by Disney , they also used the face of actor Tom Cruise for their Aladdin character so what is this ? It is a remix, pure and simple. I remember I was contacted a few months ago by a very upset woman because I quoted one of her article about EFT. She chanted the copyright law mantra. What this woman do not understand is that she is also a remixer. She took a speech by Gandhi remixed it with EFT to create a self-help EFT script this is a brilliant idea but it relies on other people ideas. That’s the problem with the mentality of people living on intellectual properties, they allow themselves to be remixer but they are upset when their work is in turn added to a new remix.
May be, because they realize that they aren’t original creator but merely remixer ?
A lawyer pointed out that artist rely on an abundant public domain, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the most remixed work , to name a few remixes of that work – West Side Story, Romeo+Juliet , Save the last dance,…..
The list is long, you think Marylin Manson song’s Tainted love is a song from him. No, It is not, he is a remixer just like the other Brittany Spears. You see it takes time to come up with something completely new. If we want or weekly dose of new content we have to largely rely on remixed creations.
The Mickey Mouse character was supposed to enter public domain in 2003 but they find a way to extend the copyright for another 20 years. According to some people it is anti-constitutional , but do you still have a constitution over there ?
The video below addresses the issue of copyright in our present digital age.

I remember when I was in school to learn Spanish I used to make mind map instead of normal note taking, the guy sitting next to me didn’t get it. Note taking in the form of a list of vocabulary is very inefficient.
Because, it doesn’t reflect how the brain work, the brain works through association. If you watch the video below, it explains how it makes more sense to use a mind map. Mind map worked great for me to learn words related to objects such all the elements in a kitchen. I just had to make a mind map called “kitchen” (cocina) and from there create all the branches with associations. Just the way the brain work.
