Dealing with disturbing images emerging during meditation

disturbingAt some point, a meditator may face disturbing images or even sound and voice during his meditations. Back then I had a lot of those. I believe it all comes down to the beliefs one put in his concept of the ‘unknown’. I remember a few years ago I meditate then I reached a state of mind awake and body asleep, I was starting to hear a voice; I don’t remember what the voice said but it was rather disturbing, another time, I had the impression that someone was in the other room…. As a matter of fact, no one was there.

There are methods to handle such annoyance like disturbing images, sound and voices. In the book I’m reading ‘Realise your Inner Potential’ the authors advocate the use of an imaginary white light that erase the disturbance, it will surely work for some. I also read another technique by Yogi master Manu Sadhu that consist prior to meditate to shield yourself in a cocoon, you will keep that cocoon the time of your meditation and it will feed in energy and protect you against disturbance , this is also the method used in the Gateway Experience from Monroe Institute.

A method I get from Bruce Moen author of ‘Voyage Into the Unknown’ is seeing it not there, this is very simple say that the disturbing image is a man with an axe in your room, what you have to do it is to image your room without that man in it.
This is effective may be better than the previous one, if you see something then you imply that it exists but if you don’t see it then it doesn’t exist, at least the principle works in that context. I found all the methods useful to deal with images , there is a last method I want to share it when an image is too sticky and keep coming back, it’s to make the image funny for instance for the image of the man with the axe, you can make his face look like Mickey Mouse , you can make him wear funny clothes at some point the disturbing effect will wear off. Now, all the methods mentioned are fine for dealing with images, but may not be as useful to deal with sound or voice, this lead to what Manu Sadhu , the great yogi teacher and I; consider the best method.

Ignore the good damn thing that disturb you, if you ignore it means it is not important and its effect will quickly vanish. Ignoring is also better than the cocoon thing, because a protective cocoon assumes that evil and disturbing images may exist and affect you. In fact, I had to reframe the use of the cocoon in the Gateway Experience to a simple energy device that feed me, I don’t need protection.
Now ok in all honesty your success with the mentioned methods in this article will largely depend of your capacity to properly concentrate on just one thing, the better your concentration the less chance disturbing imagery will scare you.
