Crying during meditation

By

Crying during meditation is a relative new phenomena for me, I started to seriously meditate in 1998 and I cried during a meditation for the first time in December 2005. I think that crying during meditation is in direct relation with the release of emotional debris , it seems that the process is controlled by the heart chakra/center. Friends asked if I cry out of pain, no, this is not a painful process, I just have tears and tears that’s it, I don’t feel any negative emotions during that process.

During meditation I observe two things about the heart center, one it uses crying to release emotional debris and second it uses laughing to recharge itself, I remember that sometimes I feel such an euphoria during my meditations and I laugh so much I have to make an added effort to stay focused. Both crying and laughing can occurs during the same session.

This is crying for releasing emotional debris however, there is another type of crying that is painful and also in relation with the heart chakra this one doesn’t occurs during meditation sessions, it occurs whenever you close your heart out of pains, crying because the heart is broken is in fact closing the heart center, a painful process. There are two more types of crying these one have nothing to do with meditation but I mention them to avoid confusion this is crying for getting attention and crying because of physical pain.

Now, back to laughter, when we laugh we open our heart chakra and it is energized, have you ever heard of Norman Cousin ? Most of our diseases have an emotional basis to it, we get sick because of unresolved emotions, check out the Karol Truman and Louise Hays books, they have list of emotions causing diseases, Norman Cousin is known to be the man who laughed his way to health, in 1960’s he was diagnosed with a degenerative illness causing the breakdown of collagen, the fibrous tissue that binds together the body’s cells, Doctors claimed that he only had a few months left to live, however, he was able to heal himself with his diet system and a massive dose of humor.

I think that Norman completely re-energized himself by laughing so much and completely removed the deep cause of his illness, whether you cry or laugh during your meditation they are ‘gift’ experiences to welcome, one thing more I want to say about laughing is that it also helps to accept things that otherwise we would not accept , they are things we think about and it make us sad or upset however to be totally in peace and in order to reach that state of unconditional love , we need to accept all, not accepting is actually not rejecting the event or the thing you don’t like, not accepting is rejecting a part of yourself that you don’t like, the world being our mirror, if we are upset at war, racism or whatever, certainly the cause of the upset is in us rather than in these things, black humor helps us to accept the unacceptable , express emotions that otherwise we repress, the more you can accept aspect of yourself you don’t like the greater the healing in you will be, these are necessary step to reach a state of unconditional love. Self-acceptance.

I just experienced this! After breathing into each of the chakras I visualized gold pouring into each one down my spine and overflowing…then found myself simultaneously laughing and crying. I think it is an indication of released energy. Confusing and wonderful. :)

I recently found myself crying while meditating. I thought it is an unusual phenomenon. Glad to read your article…

I did it too, and it was most definably a cleansing process. It was not sobbing, it was more or less random uncontrollable bouts of tears, with my abdomen pushing up(sort of like sobbing, but with no sorry)

Like when your a child, and you cry hard, and your diaphragm moves, like that, but not so intense.

I have been studying Buddhism for nearly a year now but I haven’t meditated as much as I believe I should. For a while, things were going really good for me after I discovered the practice of Buddhism; I had a good job, I was going to college, and I met a woman that completely captured my heart. Within the last few months, I quit my job because of school, I am struggling with my studies and trying to find work again, and the woman I love has her heart set on another man. Needless to say, these have been very dark days. After this, I stopped meditating because I felt like I was begging and asking for something to bring good fortune onto me in my time of sadness. Recently, I have felt as if I have forgotten my practice and I finally decided to sit down and meditate. I was very calm at first, but out of nowhere, I began to feel this intense wave of emotion come over me and I began to cry. I did not think at all about my misfortune, but about my abandonment of the once powerful presence in my life and I felt as if something else was crying through me. So far I have felt a great deal of relief and I feel a much stronger need to resume my practice.
